I am interested in the language of thought; thoughts represented in the mind without words, in a word, mentalese. The abstract process of the mind, especially in the arena of memory is the primary subject matter of my paintings. I find I am frequently living in the arena of memory, not able to fully appreciate the significance of a moment till it has passed and I have been able to reflect upon it through the colored lens of memory. For memory truly is colored by the individual, and the more often a memory is revisited the more opaque becomes the lens. Memories that people hold dear are often the ones farthest from the truth. The more a memory is returned to the more it becomes tainted by emotion and pieces of truth are left in the shadows, highlighting areas the individual places value upon. In my work, I find that color and form circumvent the limiting function of verbal language in relating memory, whether it be a specific memory or a portrait of its method. My medium is primarily oil paint, working on stretched canvas or board. I enjoy the rich range, malleable array of textures, and physical layers that oil paint offers. Though oil paint is my primary practice I believe in letting concept dictate imagery, and continue to explore other artistic mediums. My work ranges from representational to abstract, thought mostly I work in the space between these two labeled as abstraction.
